Faith Based Film “Sound of Freedom” Beats “Indiana Jones” at Box Office and Sheds Light on Human Trafficking

Sound of Freedom is based on the true story of Tim Ballard, a former government agent who founded Operation Underground Railroad, an organization that rescues children from sex trafficking. The movie focuses on a young boy who is rescued early in the film. They soon realize that his sister is still in slavery and begin a rescue attempt to save her. This story is based on a real life mission that happened in October 2014, called “Triple Take” where they were able to rescue 123 victims of trafficking.

Jim Caviezel, who plays Tim Ballard, had this to say about the movie:

“We believe this movie has the power to be a huge step forward towards ending child trafficking, but it will only have that effect if millions of people see it.”

Independence Day weekend is one of the biggest weekends of the year for summer movies. The Sound of Freedom opened on on July 4th with an amazing 14.2 million dollar box office. Considering the cost to make this movie was 14.5 million, Angel Studios (creators of The Chosen) made back the film’s budget in the first weekend!

The movie surpassed expected summer blockbuster, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The 5th movie in the series had opened the weekend before, on June 30th. On July 4th weekend, it brought in 11.7 million dollars. The cost to make the Indiana Jones movie was $295 million dollars. While Indiana Jones is still working to to make back it’s budget, Sound of Freedom has earned $40 million dollars in it’s first week, more than double it’s budget.

The movie is still gaining momentum, mostly through word of mouth advertising. Another amazing fact is that to achieve these numbers, Sound of Freedom is showing in 2,850 theaters, while Indiana Jones is playing in 4,600. Many ticket sales for the movie came from an app called “Pay it Forward” that allowed people to purchase a ticket for someone else to attend the movie who wasn’t able to afford the admission.

Although, the dollars help us understand the industry success of this film, the success of the movie is about something so much bigger than financial gain. Ultimately the movie is bringing awareness to the issue of sex trafficking and transforming lives.
