Jon Foreman’s “I Propose a Toast” Shows Us the Beauty of Friendship

Best friends forever.

You’ve probably said this to someone in your life. When Jesus began His ministry He gathered all the disciples. And yes, they were His students and His followers. But, the disciples were Jesus’ friends. If you’ve ever heard the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, those three friends were thrown into a fiery furnace.

Friendships are important. Community is important. Jesus taught us that we were not meant to endure this life alone. When we cry we cry together, when we rejoice, we celebrate together! (Romans 12)

Jon Foreman, lead singer of Switchfoot, wrote a song called “I Propose a Toast.” Which I think is beautiful because you make a toast when you are with many people. This song reflects on all the memories that have brought you to where you are, and the friends and family that still do life with you to this day.

Growing up with a sister, our mother always told us “One day I’ll be gone and all you will have is each other.” And even though we were complete opposites, we always referred to each other as our “built-in best friend.” When I watch this video I can’t help but think about the silly memories like pushing each other around in our Barbie Jeep, to holding each other while we cried, to screaming our favorite songs at the top of our lungs in the car.

We call each other, pray for each other, and depend on each other. I know I’m blessed because, not many can say they have a sibling relationship like this, or even a friend.

You may be reading this and thinking about someone in your life. Call them and tell them you love them. Or maybe you feel like there’s no one in your life like that- know that God loves you and His love is greater than any relationship could ever give you. Thank You, God, for friendships and family. Thank You that we don’t have to do this life alone.

“Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other.” | Romans 12:9-10
