On August 14, 2021 a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit 78 miles west of Haiti’s capital city Port-Au-Prince. The quake was very shallow at 6.2 miles deep and the SW coast received the most damage. Haiti has also been experiencing aftershocks with the highest being 5.2. Almost 2,000 fatalities have already been reported with search efforts still continuing.
Over 6,900 people were injured, inundating local hospitals. A few days prior, Tropical Depression Fred brought high winds and heavy rain and Tropical Storm Grace is expected to bring a third strike to Haiti this week. The previous storms have resulted in rain and mudslides that are hindering relief efforts. These obstacles are expected to increase with the upcoming weather system.
Convoy of Hope is a faith-based organization with a driving passion to feed the world. Operating since 1994, they have served over 160 million people and are known to be early responders in natural disasters. Due to their feeding initiative, they have a warehouse in Haiti that is equipped with supplies.
God has already placed them in a position where they are able to react quickly. They have plans to distribute food, water, hygiene kits and medical supplies as soon as it is safe to do so. All Convoy of Hope team members and partners in the Port Au Prince area are safe and accounted for.
