How Worship Music Is Helping This Woman With Dementia

Watching someone you love battle dementia is heartbreaking.

I remember going to visit my great-grandparents with my mom and watching her cry every time on the car rides back home. I was a young kid and I was so confused as to why my Mawmaw Ruth was calling me by my mom’s name.

It’s hard. You want to help every time they cry or scream out because they can’t escape their minds.

I do remember that in these visits my family would sing hymns. One of their favorites was “In the Garden.” Pawpaw George would sing along and Mawmaw Ruth would close her eyes and hum along as my dad played guitar.

It was so peaceful while we played and sang.

Worship can change the atmosphere. Check out this video where a woman calms her mother with Alzheimer’s while her daughter beautifully sings “I’m So Blessed” by CAIN.

I definitely teared up after watching that. The way her mother responds to the singing and even sings along is precious! And speaking of responses, CAIN had to chime in the comments.

Social media is an amazing thing in this instance because it allows bands like CAIN to see how their music is a ministry!

Besides this encouraging video of worship, Gertrude Jordan shares educational advice for helping someone with dementia. You can find her page here.

I couldn’t help but think about the verse that tells us to worship God and then in the verse right after it says that God will “transform the renewing of your mind” or in this version “the way you think.”

Isn’t incredible that God is always with us, and He isn’t a God of confusion but a God of peace. I am so grateful that God gave us the ability to worship Him. Because it makes us more aware of His presence and helps us to come together as believers!

And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” | Romans 12:1-2 (NLT)

I’m a CNA at a nursing home, so I see people with dementia on a regular basis. This video made me tear up. I remember at my first CNA job there was this one lady who would love it when I sang her “Yahweh (No One)” by Chris Tomlin and Elevation Worship. She had probably never heard it before, but she would always calm down whenever I started singing this song. Worship is powerful!! ❤️❤️❤️
