Music is powerful. With just a few notes, music can make me feel intense sadness or deep joy. Often songs serve as the words I need when I don’t know what to pray.
When I need a soundtrack to cry my eyes out, this is the playlist I turn to. Hardly any of these songs are new, but throughout the years this playlist has reminded me God is faithful.
If your heart is breaking, I hope this playlist will remind you God is with you and He is making all things new.
1. Remedy by David Crowder Band
Here we are, bandaged and bruised, awaiting a cure
If you are walking through a battle of sickness, listen to this song and let the lyrics wash over you. Our God is the Great Physician, and no matter what you are facing today he is holding you with His strong right hand.
2. Who Am I by NEEDTOBREATHE
You grow your roses on my barren soul
This song is perfect for those moments when you feel far away from God. Let it be a reminder that your failures, mistakes, and both your past and future sins do not define you.
3. Joy Invincible by Switchfoot
Hallelujah nevertheless, was the song the pain couldn’t destroy
Hallelujah nevertheless, You’re my joy invincible
When my plans fall apart and life spirals out of control, this song reminds me I can find true joy in Christ despite my pain and circumstances.
4. All The Poor and Powerless by The Digital Age
And all who hurt with nothing left
Will know that You are holy
This song reminds me God is a God of redemption. He is for the poor and the powerless, and he is our refuge and our strength. He sustains us when we have nothing left to give.
5. Our King Has Come by Elevation Worship
He is alive and we have found our peace
This song has been my prayer on so many occasions. When I feel heartbroken and empty, I remind myself of these lyrics. Because of His death and resurrection, I have hope in Him. One day, when all is said and done, there will be a new heaven and a new earth where all our pain and sin will be washed away.
6. You’re the Only One by Chris Renzema & Moriah Hazeltine
Though the earth may try
To blind me from your goodness
You shine through
When you feel like you’re ready to give into the lies of the world, this song will give you strength. It will remind you that God’s promises are good even when His ways don’t seem to make any sense.
7. Take Me Back by Urban City Rescue (Neon Feather Remix)
It’s the way You always lead me
Through the fire and the flood
If you feel lost and hopeless, I hope this song encourages you today. If you look for Him, Jesus will find you and lead you even in the middle of your pain.
8. Holy (Wedding Day) by The City Harmonic
O death where is your sting
Cause we’ll be there singing
Holy Holy Holy is the Lord
If the reality of death is present in your life, this song will remind you Christ has defeated the grave and one day death will be no more.
9. I Will Follow by Jon Guerra
In the good things and in the hardest part
I believe and I will follow you
I want my life to be a reflection of this song. I hope through the good, bad, and even in death, I cling to Him with my entire life, trusting that He is good and faithful.
10. The Cure for Pain by Jon Foreman
I tried to find a cure for the pain
Oh my Lord, to suffer like you do…
It would be a lie to run away
Even if God doesn’t remove the pain from our lives, this song encourages me to never give up and to never lose faith. Jesus himself suffered immensely for my sins, and he is with me when I suffer too.
