“I don’t know what tomorrow’s gonna bring. Because life’s an adventure. And that’s what this is- our little adventure.” | Helen Smallbone (Unsung Hero)
Prayers can be messy.
Sometimes they’re quiet at bedtime, other times there’s yelling and crying out to God for an answer. Sometimes there’s silence and solitude, and other times you’re holding hands gathered in agreement. Sometimes they’re repeated and other times you’re at a loss for words.
In for KING + COUNTRY’s movie, Unsung Hero, there is a scene where the Smallbone family sits on the floor to pray. Helen Smallbone, the mother of these 7 children, tapes two folders on the wall with the words “Please” and “Thank You” written on them. All of the children, no matter how young, started to write their prayers on these notecards to put up on the wall. And there was something so powerful about this family with nothing, giving what they had to thank God and pray and believe together.
- The “Please” side is intended to ask God for things. Any request that you have to lay at Jesus’ feet- like a new job, a loved one to receive healing, even just a peaceful day. These requests can be as big or small as you want them to be, and until they have an answer- they stay on the wall.
- The “Thank You” side shows the blessings that you’re grateful for. This portion can also hold big or small things to thank God for like- someone being kind, your family, a bonus at your job.
- And here’s the cool part, when you’re requests are answered on the “Please” side, they can be moved right on over to the “Thank You” side.

A common misconception about prayer is that it has to be an eloquent and reverent transfer of thoughts to God. But, God told us to come to Him as we are. He wants us.
This prayer wall idea can help us visualize our requests and the things we’re grateful for. It’s important to remember that God isn’t a vending machine. We can always pray and believe in the things we ask for, but God will not always give us what we want when we want it.
Another big takeaway from this movie is that God makes everything beautiful in its time (Ecclesiastes 3:11). Even though God cares for us and provides for us, it will always be His timing and not ours. And I’ve found that sometimes the Lord will give you even more than you asked for in the first place.
The Smallbones are dubbing April 26th as “Family Day,” for you to take your families to the theater and celebrate. I couldn’t think of a better movie to honor family and see God’s miracles!

I can’t wait to take my family to see this film. My family definitely goes on the “Thank You” side of my prayer wall. If you want to add one of your prayer requests to our prayer wall and have someone else pray for you just tap here.
