I love my job, but somedays I need a vacation.
I’m pretty sure my boss will be reading this so let me state one more time: I love my job. I just also really like weekends.
In my first job after highschool as a groundskeeper, I had to do so many pointless tasks. I hated it. One day, as I found myself watering trees in the rain… yes, you read that right. I thought to myself, I better not have to work in heaven.
Since then, I’ve always wondered what the job situtation in eternity will be like. The Bible tells us heaven is a place of holy flourishing. It’s a place where evil is no more and sorrow will only be a forgotton memory. But will we have careers? Will we have to mow our lawns? Will work become more enjoyable?
I did a little digging. Here’s what I found.
When God created the Garden of Eden He saw that it was good. He gave Adam and Eve the task to care for Eden, to cultivate it, and expand it.
The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it. – Genesis 2:15 NLT
The word “tend” here comes from the Hebrew word “avodah” which means “to work.”
What makes this even more interesting is “avodah” also means “to worship”. In fact, these meanings are interchangeable. God looks at our work as worship.
It’s easy to equate worship with singing on Sunday mornings. We even have a whole music genre dedicated to worship. But this is just a piece of the puzzle. Worship is more than a genre. It’s the work we do.
I don’t know what work will look like in heaven, but I do know work will look different in heaven. Because God is making everything new, work will not be exhausting, stressful, and draining. Instead, the work we do in heaven will be life giving, meaningful, and worshipful.
He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” – Revelations 21:5 NLT
This is a reminder that right now on earth I have work to do. We all have work to do. God has called us to serve others. He has called us to take care of the widows and orphans. He has called us to work together and to glorify Him.
Whether I’m writing a blog for my job, or serving others, I am called to do it without grumbling and complaining. This is my worship.
Also, to my boss who inevitably is reading this, I hope you don’t hold this against me the next time I request time off.
