Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. – 2 Corinthians 5:17
As I begin this blog, I’d first like to share my gratitude to Theo Von for sharing a very honest, real, authentic and raw look at stepping into a new chapter of faith. It’s not easy to go against the grain and actively choose a new direction for your life. It takes courage and perseverance, something that I think we can all admit is challenging, even when you grow up in the Christian faith. Theo’s plea for God to rewrite his story is an important reminder that we’re never too far out of God’s reach.
Theo Von may be most known for his comedy specials on Netflix or podcast, This Past Weekend, that has 4.6 million subscribers on YouTube alone. The effortlessly funny comedian presents himself as a humble, down-to-earth guy who doesn’t take life too seriously.
That all changed in a recent episode of his hit podcast when he began to get emotional about his faith and the path that he was on.
Do you want to be healed?
When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” – John 5:6
What Theo expresses in that podcast clip is a genuine feeling of conflict.
From the outside looking in, it may be easy for us to think “Of course I’d want to be healed! Who wouldn’t?” But we’ve all lived a certain way for some time and could admit that we’ve become comfortable with where we’re at. Staying complacent is the easier option. Change is hard and it requires a great deal of faith and trust in God’s plan.
This is a great moment for us all to stop, think about what’s going on in our lives that we’ve become complacent with and ask, “Do I want to be healed from this?”
There’s bravery in asking for change.
Asking God for a new story means understanding that it can come in any form that God requires.
We can’t ask for a new story and then tell God how we want it to unfold. I mean, we can but that doesn’t guarantee that’s how it’ll happen!
Theo openly asking for a new story was a bold step of faith – trusting God with his steps even when he can’t see the road ahead, and knowing that there’s a part of him that wants to resist the change.

14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him. – 1 John 5:14-15
If you’re ready to ask God for a new story in your life, this could be your moment! Wondering how to ask? It’s as simple as that – just ask Him. You don’t need the perfect words or to wait on just the right moment. Have an honest conversation with Him, just like you would with your best friend.
When we become desperate for change, God will meet us where we’re at.
I know I’ll be praying for Theo Von as he continues to navigate this journey of faith and trusting God for a new story. I’ll also be praying for you if you’ve also realized that it is time for your new story.
Have you experienced God giving you a new story? How did you navigate the changes that came with it? Sound off in the comments!
