10 Bible Verses for Dealing With Grief

Jesus mourned too.

Jesus wept when he found out the news of his friend Lazurus passing (John 11:35). He went to go be alone after the death of his cousin, John the Baptist (Matthew 14:13). Losing someone you love causes unimaginable pain. Everyone processes grief in their own way and at their own pace.

In these moments of heartbreak, God’s word can bring us comfort. Jesus understands your pain and it breaks His heart to see you hurt. Take hope in His words because the things of this world will pass away, but His word remains forever.

1. Psalm 34:17-18 (NLT)

“The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.”

2. Matthew 5:4 (NLT)

God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”

3. Romans 8:38-39 (NLT)

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

4. Revelation 21:4 (NLT)

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”

5. 1 Thessalonians 4:14 (NLT)

“For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died.”

6. 2 Corinthians 4:18 (NLT)

“So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.”

7. John 16:22 (NLT)

So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy.”

8. Isaiah 41:10 (NLT)

“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.”

9. Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT)

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”

10. Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NLT)

“Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.”

If any of these verses speak to you, jot them down and place them somewhere you’ll see them daily. Share them with a friend or loved one who might be facing loss, and remember—you are never alone.
