Unstoppable College Softball Team Credit Their Success to the Lord

The Oklahoma Sooners Women’s Softball team has just won the 2023 Women’s College World Series Championship series, with an impressive 53 game win streak! The Sooners have now won three consecutive national titles, a feat that only one other Division I softball program has ever accomplished. In a recent press conference with the coach and 3 members of the team, an ESPN reporter inquired about the pressure of playing in a season where every other team was after their position.

How do they find joy in an environment that would seem to bring anxiety?

For four minutes, the women declared their faith, telling the world where their true source of joy and strength comes from.

Grace Lyons led the way explaining,

“The only way you can have a joy that doesn’t fade away is from the Lord and any other type of joy is actually happiness that comes from circumstances and outcomes.”

Jayda Coleman shared that winning the College World Series in the past didn’t bring the fulfillment that she thought it would. It was turning to God that truly brought joy to her life.

“Our life is in Christ and that’s all that matters.”

Alyssa Brito gave an inside look at what the team focuses on. They have a saying “eyes up” accompanied by a motion of referencing their eyes and pointing to the sky. I’m sure at first glance, it seems the girls are signaling a play, but the meaning is much more important. They are encouraging each other to fix their eyes on Christ. She tells us that the concept of keeping God first, brings the steadiness they experience when they play softball. This mindset fuels their love for each other and the game and they believe each game is an opportunity to glorify God.

Coach Patty Gasso loves that the women are unapologetic about the way they feel and what they believe. She credits their success to having the right mentality about the way they play the game.

Baylor coach, Glenn Moore, said this about the champions:

“They’ve really separated themselves. Everybody else, I’ll tell you, is playing for No. 2.”

Right now, this team seems unstoppable and they are certainly serving an unstoppable God!
