“The Forge” Movie Depicts the Life-Changing Power of Mentorship

You’re not just a statistic. You’re a child of God.

“The Forge” movie hit the theaters on August 23rd, 2024. From the Kendrick brothers (co-creators of the hit movie, War Room), this story of young boy Isaiah facing the struggles of growing up. This is a new twist to the original story of War Room with some cast members reuniting like Priscilla Shirer and Karen Abercrombie.

What stands out about this Christian film is that we barely see any scenes in an actual church- but this movie shows us what church is actually about.

To the naked eye, this movie seems like a shallow plot, following a young boy who is growing up and finding a job. But when a stranger takes him under his wing, he takes the time to invest in Isaiah by teaching him faith in the real world.

This applies to every one of us. We build connections with others by spending time with one another. That’s how it works with the church. That’s how it works with Jesus. The Church is not just about saving souls, it’s about making disciples.

Your story with Jesus doesn’t end when you give your life to Him. That’s why we say we’re “born again,” because it’s only the beginning. And in this movie, the climax doesn’t happen when the main character gives his life to Christ, it’s what happens after that.

“There’s a difference between being a convert of the faith and being a disciple. Disciple, there’s a cost. Your faith is a gift, scripture says in Ephesians 2:8-9, but Jesus said whoever wants to be my disciple must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. That’s what we need in this generation. We need to see men and women wholeheartedly following Jesus and seeing the fruit of that.” | Alex Kendrick

There is something to be said in the Bible about mentorship and “mantels.” In 1 Kings, Elijah passes on his mantle (which was a large over-garment or robe) to Elisha who was his student. Elijah specifically mentored Elisha and gave him his cloak or mantle to symbolize all of his ministry was now in the hands of Elisha.

That’s powerful. Elijah was not Elisha’s father, but he believed in him, prayed for him, and taught him things of the Lord. Who is your Elijah?
