Phil Wickham to Voice King David in New Angel Studios Animated Musical

Christmas came early…

Angel Studios, the same team behind the recent kids’ hit The King of Kings, just announced that the GRAMMY-nominated worship artist Phil Wickham will voice the legendary shepherd-turned-king in their upcoming animated musical DAVID.

The film hits theaters December 19, 2025, and it’s already shaping up to be one of the most ambitious Bible-based films ever made.

DAVID will tell the epic story of the boy who took down Goliath, wrote psalms that still shape our worship today, and became one of the most inspiring figures in Scripture. The movie has been in development for years — three decades, in fact, under the direction of Phil Cunningham and Sunrise Animation Studios.

According to creator Phil Cunningham, Wickham’s voice carries all the adventure, strength, and vulnerability they wanted for the character.

Cunningham’s dream was to tell the story of David in a way that would feel both timeless and cinematic. His team even traveled to Israel to study the geography, architecture, and atmosphere of David’s world. Every scene, from the shepherd fields to the palace, was designed to reflect the authenticity and depth of the story.

If Angel Studios’ recent animated release The King of Kings (which one 2025 Dove Award for Feature Film of the Year) was any hint, there’s a growing appetite for high-quality, faith-filled animation.

Hope for the Next Generation

When DAVID releases next Christmas, it’s a chance for families, churches, and communities to experience the beauty of Scripture on the big screen.
