When a Blunder Leads to Blessings with Russell Dickerson

If you don’t know the name Russell Dickerson, then it’s my personal suggestion that you scan his music on your favorite streaming platform. One of two things will likely happen:

If you’re like me, you’ll love every song and sing along to every word. If you’re like my husband, you will likely play a song or two and realize that you’ve been listening to Russell’s music for years and just never realized!

That’s right, Russell Dickerson has been making music for many years and has had a steady rise to success with every album, which has increased significantly in the last year.

On May 13, 2026 he performed to a sold out crowd at Red Rocks Amphitheater for his Russellmania tour, getting emotional as he took in the view before him.

But, before he was performing to sold out arenas, Dickerson revealed that he was Chris Tomlin’s guitar tech.

Reflecting on an incident involving an un-tuned guitar during Tomlin’s Red Rock’s performance years before, Dickerson apologized for the incident and made it up to the audience by performing “How Great is Our God.”

In front of a sold-out crowd at a country concert, Dickerson took the opportunity to worship God during this monumental moment in his career.

While the story brought humor to the night (and Dickerson has collaborated with Tomlin on projects since that moment) the true focus of the evening was how God used that unexpected and embarrassing moment from long ago to bring honor to His name all these years later – proving that He truly directs our steps in ways we could never imagine.

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;

I will guide you with My eye. – Psalm 32:8

From a personal perspective, I recently attended Russellmania during his sold-out birthday concert in Nashville. Not only was the concert incredibly fun, but Dickerson never fails to give glory to God for his success. He even prayed blessings over the marriages of concert-goers, a moment that meant a lot to my husband and me. (Hey, RD. Maybe it’s time for you and your wife to write a Bible Study on Marriage? I’d buy that! Just saying…)

So, next time you witness a blunder on stage, like an un-tuned guitar, remember that it could be a moment God uses for His glory years down the road!
