“I never thought I’d see an animated cat and Jesus in the same film.”
This brand-new animated film from Angel Studios is packed with everything you’d want in a faith-based movie for families: heart, depth, beauty, and a whole lot of Jesus.
Yep, it’s animated. But don’t let that fool you—it’s not watered down. This movie leans into the powerful, emotional moments of Jesus’ life while still making it kid-friendly and totally accessible.
A Story That Starts With a Kid
The story is told through the eyes of Charles Dickens, who’s sharing the story of Jesus with his own son, Walter. It’s such a cool picture—watching a child hear about Jesus for the first time and be moved by it enough to run and wake up his siblings to tell them too. It reminded me of that child-like faith of the woman at well in John 4 where she runs to tell her entire village that the Messiah is here! It’s such a natural entry point for kids to relate to the story.
And while there’s plenty of whimsy (like a missing cat and some stunning animation), the film doesn’t shy away from the emotional weight of the crucifixion either. When Jesus dies, kids feel it. The sadness is real. But so is the hope that follows.
Made With Love (Literally)
The South Korean director, Seong-ho Jang, has been dreaming about this film since 2015 (that’s a whole decade!!). After delays during the pandemic, he said the Lord worked a miracle to bring it back to life. And you can tell this film was a labor of love.
“If I were to summarize the teaching of Jesus in one word, it would be love,” he said. “I tried to share the love of Jesus with this film.” | Seong-ho Jang (Director)
Everything—from the lifelike animation, filmed with real actors to capture natural movement, to the incredible soundtrack (hi, Kristin Chenoweth!)—was crafted with intention. Not to mention the surprisingly star-studded cast with voice actors Mark Hamill, Pierce Brosnan, and Oscar Isaac as the voice of Jesus.

Kids Really Get It
There’s something special about the way this film connects. Taking these heavy emotions of seeing our Savior on a cross, and putting that into a language that a kid can fathom- that’s impressive.
And honestly? One of the most powerful reactions came from the CEO of Angel Studios himself. He said his son—who was a missionary in Hong Kong—uncontrollably wept when he saw the trailer for the first time. Because he knows the dangers of spreading your faith in Eastern countries. This film hits deep.
The King of Kings is more than just another Easter movie. It’s a beautiful way to help your kids see who Jesus really is—His kindness, His miracles, His humor, His love, and yes, His sacrifice. It’ll spark some amazing conversations around your dinner table.
