Many people are known to post what some call their highlight reels on social media. However, others take the time to replay people’s worst moments.
Even in a digital world where things good and bad live forever, grace reminds us that no one should be defined by their lowest point. Recently, Netflix released a documentary meant to be a tell all about America’s Next Top Model. The new documentary sparked conversation online as viewers revisited moments from the show and called out many of the controversial moments and harsh treatment contestants experienced behind the scenes. Many called for Tyra Banks to be canceled once again.
However, America’s Next Top Model Cycle 1 finalist, Shannon Stewart, wrote a powerful reflection on Tyra, personal failure and the mercy God extends to all of us.
The three big takeaways from her post allow us to reflect on God’s grace, redemption and the humility we should all have.
1. No one should be defined by their worst moment.
In a digital world that endlessly replays mistakes, it’s easy to reduce someone to a single clip or headline—but every person’s story is far more complex than that.
As Scripture reminds us,
|“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23
2. Recognizing our own brokenness changes how we view others.
When we honestly acknowledge our own sin and failures, it becomes much harder to condemn others and much easier to lead with humility and grace.
|“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” 1 John 1:8
3. Mercy and redemption must apply to everyone—not just ourselves.
If we believe God’s grace is big enough to redeem our mistakes, we must be willing to extend that same grace to others.
| “And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32
While the documentary shows how reality TV can highlight the worst aspects of someone’s journey, Shannon uses her voice to highlight the reality of who we are called to be in Christ.
Like Shannon, you don’t have to simply accept what life throws at you. You can choose to just survive—or truly thrive. Discover how to live your best life by taking our FREE course:
