This time of year is filled with Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree and Jingle Bells playing throughout grocery stores and gas stations. While those are some great classics, here are nine songs that will help you remember to the true reason for Christmas and help tune your heart to worship!
1. King of Kings | Hillsong Worship
“In the darkness we were waiting, without hope without light till from heaven You came running, there was mercy in Your eyes. To fulfill the law and prophets, to a virgin came the Word. From a throne of endless glory, to a cradle in the dirt”
When hope seemed to be lost, when it seemed like God would never again show himself- Jesus came down to live among us. The Creator wrapped Himself in the very flesh that He created, showing ultimate humility so that we could have life (Zechariah 9:9). How amazing is our God? That He left His throne to bring us mercy.
2. The Awaited One | LOVKN
“The prophesies spoke of a ruler to come. The faithful would long for His kingdom. Your purpose revealed the awaited one. The virgin would yield Your only Son.”
Even in our brokenness, we weren’t left hopeless. Our need for a Savior was not a surprise to God, from the moment sin entered the world, the coming of our Messiah was foretold. The faithful looked for Him and longed for Him (Isaiah 7:14). Now, we know the story, celebrate the first coming of Jesus and we wait in anticipation for Him to come again.
3. Hope Has A Name | Passion ft. Kristian Stanfill
“Hope has a name, Emmanuel. The light of the world who broke through the darkness. All hail the king, Emmanuel. The light of the world, the glory of heaven.”
We were stuck in darkness, controlled by our sin and defined by our brokenness. But, God through Jesus made a way for us. He came as light, as hope- Jesus gave His life so that we could have eternal life (John 8:12).
4. Immanuel | Beautiful Eulogy
“The Infinite become infant, the Maker becomes man. The Divine becomes despised and the Christ is crucified.”
It’s so crazy to me that God himself entered the world so that we could have life. While it’s not a traditional worship song, this spoken word piece blows my mind and reminds me that Jesus emptied himself and was born in the likeness of man, knowing that He would die a death that we deserved (Philippians 2:6-11). The Infinite became an infant, for us. All glory be to Jesus.
5. God With Us | Terrian
“Be not dismayed, fear not the darkness. Jesus is here, He walks beside us. Gracious is He, through all our weakness. Forever faithful, forever good”
Our God didn’t leave us to figure out things on our own. He didn’t leave us hanging, didn’t leave us to attempt to earn our way back to Him. Instead, He came to us. God with us (Matthew 1:23), Jesus stepping down from Heaven to make all things new.
6. Behold | Phil Wickham ft. Anne Wilson
“Behold the King has come, Divinity incarnate, Creator of the world breathing our air. Behold what light has come and the dark cannot contain it. The Savior of the world Is finally here.”
Divinity incarnate. Can you just think about that for a moment? God loved us so much that He sent Jesus to dwell among us. To walk along side the very people that would betray Him, hate Him and send Him to His death. The Word, the One who has always existed, walking along side of His creation, so that redemption could come (John 1:14).
7. So in Love | Isla Vista Worship
“Father’s endless mercy prepared a table for me. How can it even be, you sent your Son down to save me? No other name will I praise but yours.”
What an act of mercy, what a gracious God. Not only did Jesus come to save us, but He prepared a table for us. Gave us a home, gave us a hope. We were so underserving yet freely given. And while we were still His enemy, He came to save us (Romans 5:8). Jesus, the name above every other name.
8. All Glory Be to Christ | Kings Kaleidoscope
“When on the day the great I Am, the faithful and the true. The Lamb who was for sinners slain, Is making all things new.”
The faithful, the true, the Holy One. Stepping down from Heaven, knowing that He would die, yet came any way to make all things new. Knowing the only way for us to enter the presence of God was the atonement for our sins. We needed new hearts, we needed life and He was the only One who could do that (Revelation 21:5).
9. Ancient of Days | Shane & Shane
“Though I may not see what the future brings, I will watch and wait for the Savior King. Then my joy complete, standing face to face in the presence of the Ancient of Days.”
Jesus has come to give life and we anticipate the day when He comes again. We may not know the future, but we no longer have to fear whatever comes our way. No one has ever come before Him nor will they remain after, we can rest knowing that our future is held by God (Isaiah 44:6).
