5 Hillsong United Songs That Speak Truth Into Your Life

When I am going through any season in life I look to music to help me walk through it. During good seasons I want to listen to music that amplifies that feeling. When I am walking through something hard or challenging, I look to music to speak the opposite of what I am feeling.

Worship is where I go first because I know that it can:

  • Speak the truth to combat the lie
  • Help take down the walls I’ve built
  • Change a mindset I am stuck in
  • Remind me of who I really am

In an interview with BUILD, Joel Houston explained it like this:

“Music has this incredible ability, that very few things on earth do, to really kind of push beyond all the kind of layers we can put up as human beings, all of our defense mechanisms… there is a quote that simply says, “Music has the ability to enter the soul without permission” and its true. Music can change an atmosphere.”

So when Hillsong United released People, I was excited to hear the truth it would proclaim. As I began to listen, it didn’t disappoint. The truths that these songs remind you about Jesus are so powerful and I know I will continue to go back to these songs and discover more but these are some of the truths I noticed in a few of the songs.

(Each of these songs has so much in them, so even if what I highlighted isn’t what you are walking through listen anyway, God just might show himself to you in a different way than He did me!)

So If You Are Feeling…

Tired:

Hold On and Know Your Help Comes from God (Psalm 121:1-2)

So don’t let your heart be troubled
Hold your head up high
Don’t fear no evil
Fix your eyes on this one truth
God is madly in love with you
So take courage
Hold on
Be strong
Remember where our help comes from

Defeated:

He is Faithful and Has Never Left Your Side (Romans 8:37-39

He’s still faithful to deliver
Mighty as Heaven to save
He’s still good on His promises
And His love still never fails
He’s not moved by perfection
Or how well we look the part
But He’s wild about the hidden stuff
Like He’s wild about the heart

Lost:

He is Your Guide and Your Comfort  (Psalm 23:4

So I will praise You on the mountain
And I will praise You when the mountain’s in my way
You’re the summit where my feet are
So I will praise You in the valleys all the same
No less God within the shadows
No less faithful when the night leads me astray
You’re the heaven where my heart is
In the highlands and the heartache all the same

Ashamed:

His Grace and Death Covers You (Romans 5:9, Romans 3:24-25

And that grace
Owns the ground where the grave did
Where all my shame remains
Left for dead in Your wake
You crashed those age-old gates
You left no stone unturned
You stepped out of that grave
And shouldered me all the way

Unloveable:

His Love For You is Everlasting (John 3:16, Jeremiah 31:3

I was found
Before I was lost
I was Yours
Before I was not
You wear the scars
For all my mistakes
And that part just wrecks me
And I know I don’t deserve this kind of love
Somehow this kind of love is who You are
It’s a grace I could never add up
To be somebody You still want
But somehow You love me as You find me
