I was today years old when I heard Larry the Cucumber singing Carrie Underwood. And Elton John.
If you grew up in a Christian household in the ’90s or 2000s, there’s a 100% chance you know the iconic genius that is VeggieTales. I still quote it to this day, and yes, as an adult, I tear up just hearing that closing line in my head: “God made you special, and He loves you very much.”
But you can’t talk about VeggieTales without mentioning the ICONIC silly songs. They even hit Billboard charts in the 90s- that is not a joke.
All the memes and reruns of these singing and dancing vegetables, yet I had no idea there’s an entire underground world of VeggieTales albums that most fans don’t even know exist. With everything from country covers, to disco, to a lullaby album?? (I have to say, imagining Larry the cucumber singing a baby to sleep is a bit of a funny visual)
So here’s a list of 5 deep-cut VeggieTales albums that will totally throw off your Spotify Wrapped after you look them up. You’re welcome.
1. Bob & Larry Go Country
This is the album that sparked this entire idea. While searching for country songs for a Song Battle, we came upon Larry the Cucumber singing “Jesus, Take the Wheel!” The 2012 album covers so many other legendary country songs like “9 to 5” by Dolly Parton, “Life is a Highway by Rascal Flatts, and “Forever And Ever, Amen” by Randy Travis. Their cover of “I Will Always Love You” includes references to silly songs like “His Cheeseburger” and “The Hairbrush Song.”
And here’s the most patriotic of them all, “God Bless The U.S.A.” proudly performed by the French Peas. 🇺🇸🦅
2. Bob & Larry Sing The ’70s
🎵If you like to DISCO with potatoes, up and down the produce aisle… 🕺This 2006 album has everything from “Funkytown” to “We Are Family” and songs from disco legends like Stevie Wonder and Elton John. Once you hear their cover of “Jesus Is Just Alright,” you’ll never hear it the same way in your head.
Bob & Larry Sing The ’80s
As a special inclusion, there is also an 80s album. And yes, there is a parody called “Gourds Just Want To Have Fun.” Enjoy.
3. Veggie Rocks!
Now, if you want to talk deep cut VeggieTales… this is it. A bunch of Christian metal artists like Skillet, Audio Adrenaline and Rebecca St. James came together to do rock renditions of silly songs. You will definitely giggle when you hear Rebecca sing this rock version of the theme song… and you’ll probably headbang too.
4. 25 Favorite Lullaby Songs!
Okay, but Junior Asparagus singing “Rock A Bye Baby” may be the cutest thing I’ve heard all week. This 2009 album includes a soft version of songs like “He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands” and “This Little Light of Mine.” The album is exactly 1 hr and 4 minutes. So who knows? Maybe it could be your kids’ next nap time playlist.
5. Here I Am To Worship
This feels like a 2000s kid nostalgia fever dream. With covers of worship songs like “Shout To The Lord,” “How Great Is Our God,” and of course Junior Asparagus once again takes us away with “I Can Only Imagine.” (And the bridge hits.)
There’s even some collabs on this one with worship artists like Natalie Grant and Aaron Shust!
Also, those were just a few. They also have a gospel album, a party playlist, a VBS song collection, and more!
