What makes you rich?
In a world driven by money, it’s easy to measure success by the size of your paycheck or the things you own. We need money for essentials like food, clothes, and shelter. It helps us bless others and care for those around us. But sometimes, the pursuit of wealth can become all-consuming, overshadowing what truly matters.
Ben Rector’s recent EP features a song called “The Richest Man in the World,” where he reminds us that real riches aren’t found in bank accounts or possessions. Instead, they’re found in the people who fill our lives—our family, friends, and the memories we make together.
“You can spend your whole life wanting what you don’t have
Or you can find the beauty in the things you do” | Ben Rector
Lyrics:
When I get to heaven
And we’re lined up outside the pearly gates
While we’re all walking, small talking, mingling
I already know what I’m gonna sayWhen we all trade stories
Of what we did with our lives
I won’t say that I played music or could sing
When it’s my turn I think I’ll smileSay I was
The richest man in the world
Father to a baby girl
And two boys that I know loved me
Was famous to a few good friends
And beside me til the end
Was my wife who is so lovely
And I don’t know who could ask for any more
I’m the richest man in the world
The richest man in the worldI may never live in Montecito
I’ll probably never own a jet
And the sands of time will wear down all the fame and fortune
Til I don’t have any leftI don’t want some great big funeral
I don’t want flowers on my grave
Just play this song or have someone write this somewhere
I’d like to let the record stateHere lies the richest man in the world
Father to a baby girl
And two boys that I know loved me
Was famous to a few good friends
And beside me til the end
Was my wife who is so lovely
And I don’t know who could ask for any more
I’m the richest man in the world
The richest man in the worldYou can spend your whole life wanting what you don’t have
Or you can find the beauty in the things you do
It’s easy to get caught up in worrying about the future, but don’t let it distract you from the blessings of today. Be intentional about telling your loved ones you care, and appreciating the small moments. As Jesus says in Matthew,
“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be. | Matthew 6:19-21 NLT
No matter what life throws your way, remember that your true wealth is found in your relationships, your purpose, and the God who makes all things rich in love.
