8 Songs that Will Help You in the Middle of Suffering

You love the music and we know how powerful it has been in our own lives. So, we’re leaving you with songs that the Lord has used in middle of our own circumstances.

Put them on repeat. Think on these lyrics. Keep them in your playlist for when you have bad days. We hope they remind you you’re not alone, God can work good from your circumstance, and that staying close to God can make all the difference when you’re going through suffering.

“Even If” by Kutless

For me, this is one of the best songs to hang onto in the tough times. It is hard when you know in your heart God can heal someone you love physically or emotionally, but for one reason or another that doesn’t happen. My faith forever changed when I stopped letting my circumstances determine my view of God. I learned to believe that God is good even when everything around me might be screaming otherwise. I love the chorus of this song because it is a great reminder:

Even if the healing doesn’t come
And life falls apart,
And dreams are still undone,
YOU are God. YOU are good!”

“Not for a Moment” by Meredith Andrews

We found out with 20 weeks left in our first pregnancy that our son wouldn’t live for more than a few hours after birth. During those agonizing 4 months, I listened to this song and watched the video hundreds of times. I couldn’t speak the words of the chorus with my own mouth during that time, but somehow I knew they were true.

After all You are constant
After all You are only good
After all You are sovereign
Not for a moment will You forsake me

“Worn” by Tenth Avenue North

This song gave me permission to admit that I was tired and worn. In the middle of our storm, we had no hope of redemption winning or the struggle ending. Listening to this song was a way for us to plead for that. And a reminder that it was ok to admit we were at the end of our own strength.

Let me see redemption win
Let me know the struggle ends
That you can mend a heart that’s frail and torn
I want to know a song can rise
From the ashes of a broken life
And all that’s dead inside can be reborn
‘Cause I’m worn

“King of the world” by Natalie Grant

This song reminds me in the midst of my stressful life that I don’t have to handle it all alone. God can handle the entire world, so he can handle my issues today.

“Gold” by Britt Nicole

Since I deal with insecurity often, this song is a constant reminder of how God sees me. I’m encouraged to know my worth is so much greater than what I can imagine.

“Eye of the Storm” by Ryan Stevenson

This was the song I’d put on every day on the way back from the hospital while my husband was sick. I would play it, cry, and then sing it until I believed it. I couldn’t wrap my brain around the storm I was in and I definitely couldn’t get out of it. But I could find peace in the midst of it in Him.

“Sparrows” by Jason Gray

The line, “If He can hold the world, He can hold this moment” runs through my head a lot. Sometimes, suffering might feel ongoing, but it packs an especially painful punch in certain moments. I need that reminder that God is still holding those moments.

“No Longer Slaves” by Bethel

“My fears were drowned in perfect love” tells me that if I feel fear, I’m not fully trusting in God’s love for me. It reminds me to go back and remind myself of the truth of how much I matter to God.

“I am a child of God” reminds me to look around at the great examples of parenting I see demonstrated through my friends with their kids, my parents, or even strangers. 1 John 4:8 tells us that God is love. He invented it. He loves us as His own children and we can see a glimmer of that by taking notice of the examples around us.
