5 Things to Do With Your Kids Before School Starts
Posted 2 months ago - Aug 5, 2026
From: Hope NationHow did summer fly by so quickly? One minute you're enjoying slow mornings and family adventures, and the next you're shopping for school supplies and setting alarms again.
Before the busyness of a new school year begins, here are five simple ways to make these last days of summer count.
1. Plan a "Kids' Choice" Day
Give each child the opportunity to choose one activity, meal or special treat. Maybe it's a trip to their favorite playground, a family movie night, mini golf or ice cream after dinner.
It's a simple way to remind them they are seen, valued and loved before the routines of school take over.
2. Take One Last Summer Adventure
You don't have to travel far to make memories.
Visit a local zoo, splash pad, nature trail, children's museum, nearby lake, or even explore a town you've never visited together. The destination isn't nearly as important as the time spent together.
3. Start a Back-to-School Tradition
Traditions give kids something to look forward to year after year.
You could make a special breakfast, decorate notebooks, take "practice" first-day photos, or write down one hope or prayer for the upcoming school year. Years from now, these little traditions may become some of your family's favorite memories.
4. Reset Rooms and Routines Together
Preparing for school can actually become quality time.
Clean out closets, organize school supplies, create a homework space, and slowly adjust bedtimes and wake-up times. Involving your kids teaches responsibility while helping everyone ease into the new schedule.
5. Celebrate Summer Memories
Before turning the page to a new season, take time to celebrate the one you're leaving behind.
Look through photos together, share everyone's favorite summer memory, create a simple scrapbook page, or enjoy a favorite family meal. End the evening with a backyard campout, a walk around the neighborhood, or simply sitting outside together.
Don't Forget to Pray Together
As exciting as a new school year can be, it often comes with nerves too—for both kids and parents.
Take a few minutes before school begins to pray together.
"Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it." — Proverbs 22:6
Ask God to give your children wisdom, courage, kind friendships, and opportunities to shine His love wherever they go. Pray for their teachers, classmates, and everyone who helps make their school a safe place to learn.
God promises to be with us in every new season.
"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." — Joshua 1:9
Whether your child is starting kindergarten, middle school, high school, or college, remember that God goes before them. The backpacks, pencils, and lunchboxes matter—but the greatest thing they can carry into this school year is the confidence that they are deeply loved by both you and their Heavenly Father.
A Simple Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of our children. As they begin a new school year, fill them with courage, wisdom, kindness, and peace. Protect them, help them grow in knowledge and character, and remind them every day that You are always with them. Bless their teachers, classmates, and everyone they encounter. May they be a light that reflects Your love wherever they go. In Jesus' name, Amen.
