Jesus Forgives Scrooge Too

Maybe Dickens was a little more of a Bible nerd than we thought.

Did you know that Ebenezer is the name of a place in the Bible? Eben-Ezer is the name of a location that is mentioned in Samuel when the Israelites and Philistines were having a battle. While Samuel and the Israelites were under attack, they prayed for His protection.

God answered Samuel’s prayer at Eben-Ezer and sent the Philistines back to their own land in retreat. When they won the battle Samuel took a stone and named it Ebenezer.

Samuel then took a large stone and placed it between the towns of Mizpah and Jeshanah. He named it Ebenezer (which means “the stone of help”), for he said, “Up to this point the Lord has helped us!” | 1 Samuel 7:12 (NLT)

I think the reference here is that when Scrooge was miserable, the spirits came to him and helped him. In the same way, Jesus finds us at our lowest points and He still loves us, forgives us, and helps us when we need it!

Join Carder and Rachelle as they start their new series of finding Jesus in Christmas movies. In this episode, you can hear them pick apart the specific elements of hope and faith in the Jim Carrey version of A Christmas Carol.

“When you’re miserable, you want everyone else to feel the same way. And I don’t even know if Scrooge knows that he’s miserable. I think he’s lied to himself for so long, that he thinks he’s content…And he doesn’t want anyone else to feel the joy of Christmas. And Christmas broken down is Christ Mass- the Celebration of Jesus, where all of this comes from.” | Rachelle
