5 Ways We Can Pray in Response to the Assassination Attempt

On Saturday, former President Trump survived the closest assassination attempt on a U.S. President since Reagan was shot in 1981.

An attempted assassination, an innocent death, two injured bystanders, and millions of anxious hearts watching their screens in disbelief. With so much chaos and fear circling, how do we respond to a tragedy like this?

In times of fear and violence, we turn to “the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort” (2 Corinthians 1:3). Join us in praying for the families of the lost and wounded and for our nation.

Almighty God… Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom, in thy Name, we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home… all of which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

When terrible things happen, knowing how to pray can feel overwhelming. Here are some starting points to help you talk through what you’re feeling with our Heavenly Father:

1. Pray for a Grieving Family

Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old volunteer fire chief, died while trying to protect his family. We must pray for peace and comfort for Corey’s family during this heavy season.

2. Pray for Trump and His Family

Donald Trump and his family need prayers during this frightening time. Pray for peace, protection, and healing.

3. Pray for the Injured Bystanders

Pray for complete healing for David Dutch and James Copenhaver who were injured. Pray for peace for their families. Also, pray for the bystanders who were not physically injured but emotionally and mentally struggling in the aftermath.

4. Pray for the Family of the Shooter

5. Pray for Our Leaders

Pray for wisdom and protection over our leaders. Pray especially for their salvation.

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. For there is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus. 6He gave his life to purchase freedom for everyone.” | 1 Timothy 2:1-6 NLT

You’re missing the most important prayer. Prayer for salvation. Prayer for Trumps salvation and all the other people mentioned here. Especially since Trump almost died, we can pray he would realize the need of salvation through this incident in his life!
