Because yes—God has a sense of humor
Let’s be honest—when you think of the Bible, you think of deep wisdom, powerful miracles, or life-changing truths. But funny? Not usually the first thing that comes to mind.
And yet, the Bible is full of surprisingly relatable, often hilarious moments. From dramatic prophets to talking animals, God’s Word has a humorous side that might just surprise you. Whether you’re into sarcasm, randomness, or dark humor, the Bible’s got it all. It’s the greatest story ever told, and trust me, there’s plenty of comedy in it.
What’s also fascinating is how the things we laugh about today are often similar to the humor found in these scriptures. You’ll notice that the timing and delivery in some of these stories could easily fit into a modern-day comedy routine.
1. 2 Kings 2:23–24
“Some boys came out of the town and jeered at him. ‘Get out of here, baldy!’… He called down a curse… and two bears came out of the woods…”
Talk about dark humor. Making fun of Elisha’s bald head? Bad idea… but also hilarious.
2. Numbers 22:28
“Then the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth, and it said to Balaam, ‘What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?’”
You’ve heard about the talking donkey. Balaam doesn’t even freak out—he just answers it. It’s giving Shrek and Donkey.
3. Exodus 32:24
“So I told them, ‘Whoever has any gold jewelry, take it off.’ Then they gave me the gold… and out came this calf!”
I’ve definitely heard a comedy routine with this kind of timing and delivery. Aaron trying to lie his way out of idol-making with the ol’ “it just popped out!” excuse.
4. Deuteronomy 25:11–12
(Go look it up. Trust us. It’s… graphic.)
Let’s just say this one lives rent-free in “weird Bible verses” territory.
5. Acts 20:9
“Seated in a window was a young man named Eutychus… who was sinking into a deep sleep… When he was sound asleep, he fell to the ground from the third story.”
Paul preached for so long that a guy literally fell asleep and out a window. I mean pastors themselves have been making jokes about this passage for ages.
6. Proverbs 27:14
“If anyone loudly blesses their neighbor early in the morning, it will be taken as a curse.”
Ancient proof that not everyone is a morning person. Coffee first, then blessings. I think that’s the most millennial verse I’ve read yet.
7. Proverbs 21:9
“Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.”
Oh, Solomon… while it may be a bit savage, it’s also kind of funny. (And relatable for both spouses, let’s be real.)
8. Matthew 7:3
“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?”
Jesus had jokes. This is comedy and conviction. A whole plank is a hilarious visual.
9. Jonah 4:3
“Just kill me now, Lord!… I’d rather be dead than alive if what I predicted will not happen.”
Jonah gets so dramatic when Nineveh repents. He’s basically mad that God is too forgiving. I feel like David and Jonah would have been great friends.
10. Acts 12:14–15
“‘You’re out of your mind,’ they told her. When she kept insisting, they said, ‘It must be his angel.’”
The early church doubting Peter was really at the door… while praying for Peter. Also, poor girl that no one believed her, but still very funny.
So, What’s the Point?
God created joy. He created laughter. In a world that can feel heavy, it’s refreshing to know that even Scripture gives us reasons to laugh. These verses remind us that God understands the full spectrum of human emotions, and Jesus experienced them too.
So, next time someone says the Bible is boring, just send them this list.
