How to Find Freedom from What Weighs You Down | Rebekah Lyons

Week 1: Who God Says You Are

Today’s truth: You are FREE in Christ!

What does this really mean and how does this change how we view ourselves? Rebekah Lyons, author of You Are Free, shares her journey to finding freedom and does a phenomenal job helping us understand the real meaning of the words, “free in Christ.”

Rebekah says, “You can’t know freedom until you know bondage. And part of the gift of the Spirit is to give us the conviction of that, to kind of show us the places we’re not free and let those things surface. So a lot of times if I’m feeling insecure or afraid, I say, ” Jesus, I need you to give that a name.” What is the thing that I’m holding onto that I can’t let go of? Show me what I need to confess!

Confession for me is a daily thing! … It’s just this posture, this on-going dialogue with God… If I notice I overreact to something, if I see envy kind of creep in, if I see comparison creep in, maybe I need to actually remove the things that create that temptation for a while. I need to be still and know that you are God. I love so much that Romans 8 says we’re no longer fearful slaves, we’re sons and daughters… Freedom is contingent on relationship where the Father says, “You are mine” and we go, “Yes I am…” We don’t have to be fearful slaves…”

In week 1 of the World’s Biggest Small Group: Identity, we’re exploring and solidifying the truths about who God says we are. Here’s a verse to think on this week as we learn:

You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body
and knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!
Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.
15 You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion,
as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.
16 You saw me before I was born.
Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
Every moment was laid out
before a single day had passed.
17 How precious are your thoughts about me, O God.
They cannot be numbered!

(Psalm 139:13-17 New Living Translation)
