The most awarded artist in Christian music is adding one more prestigious award to his collection. On June 14, 2022, Steven Curtis Chapman will be presented with the BMI Icon award at the BMI Christian awards. This award is given to songwriters who have greatly influenced the music industry and future music makers.
Steven will be the first Christian artist to win this award, following in the footsteps of previous BMI Icon award winners such as Dolly Parton (who presented Steven Curtis Chapman his first Artist of the Year Dove Award,) Barry Manilow (whose song Steven sang with his brother for his audition to work at Opryland,) and Sting (who Steven’s wife Marybeth once playfully called out for jumping line at the Grammy Awards.)
Steven has a passion for music and performing that began with his first live performance at his 1st grade talent show and transformed into a 30 year career that has brought him 59 Dove Awards, 5 Grammys for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album, an American Music Award for Favorite Contemporary Inspirational Artist and a star on the Nashville Walk of Fame.
His career has been full of exciting performances at prestigious locations such as Carnegie Hall, the Grand Ole Opry and the White House. He has made appearances on many TV shows like Good Morning America and The Tonight Show. His music has given him the opportunity to travel the world.
As much fun as these experiences had to have been, we know that for Steven it’s not about the fame or the opportunities. It’s about the people and the message of Christ that he is bringing.
He said about his career,
“If I was going to take time from my family, I wanted to know I was doing something of eternal value and significance.”
It is this commitment to purpose and to his family, along with ministries Steven is involved in such as his Show Hope adoption ministry that truly make him an icon.
Steven’s wife MaryBeth has always been his biggest supporter and cheerleader. She announced the BMI Icon award with a sweet message of encouragement for her husband on Facebook.
Steven is still going strong and continuing to spread his message of hope. He recently released his new song “Still” that praises God for His faithfulness as he looks back to all of the moments in his life.
