I Can Only Imagine, the 2018 movie about MercyMe’s Bart Millard, is getting a sequel. 

Kingdom Story Company and Lionsgate announced that production for I Can Only Imagine 2 will begin during the spring of 2025. The sequel will continue the story of the band and Bart Millard, once again played by John Michael Finley.

What I Can Only Imagine 2 Is About

After the breakout success of the song “I Can Only Imagine,” Bart Millard (Finley) is living the dream — sold-out arenas, a devoted fan base, and a thriving career. But behind the spotlight, he’s struggling to hold his family together, especially his fragile relationship with his son, Sam (Sammy Dell).

When hopeful newcomer Tim Timmons (Ventimiglia) joins the band for their biggest tour yet, he brings a new sense of gratitude and perspective to Bart’s life. But Tim’s own story carries heartbreak and hidden pain, leading both men to rediscover faith, forgiveness, and what truly matters most.

Inspired by Bart’s powerful song “Even If,” the movie explores the tension between believing in God’s power and trusting His goodness when life doesn’t go the way you hoped.

“I know what God is capable of,” Bart once said, “but even if He doesn’t come through, He’s still my hope because of what He’s already done.”

Bart has shared that the song was born out of walking through his son’s chronic illness — a reminder that faith doesn’t mean everything works out, but that God is still faithful even when prayers seem unanswered.

A new addition to the cast, Milo Ventimiglia who may know from TV shows like Gilmore Girls and This Is Us, will play singer/songwriter Tim Timmons.
