Have you ever felt nervous about sharing your story with others when it comes to talking about your faith?
It might seem intimidating, but just like facing any challenge, it’s worth it. Great leaders always encourage us to push through difficulties, and sharing our experiences can lead to some of the most meaningful moments in our lives.
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” | Acts 1:8
In the Bible, Jesus gives his followers a powerful command before leaving Earth. He says, “You will be my witnesses,” using the Greek word “martus,” which over time became connected to the word “martyr.” While the word martyr may sound daunting, being a witness simply means speaking the truth about what you’ve experienced. It’s like being called to court to share your honest account.
Jesus wants us to talk about how He has changed our lives. The term “gospel” means “good news,” and your relationship with Jesus is part of that good news. Even if your story isn’t filled with excitement, it still matters. God intervened in our lives not because we were perfect but because Jesus came to free us from evil, sin, and death (Romans 5:8).
“We have been given God in our souls and Christ in our flesh. We have the power to believe where others deny, to hope where others despair, and to love where others hurt. This and so much more is a sheer gift; it is not a reward for our faithfulness, our generous disposition, or our heroic life of prayer.” | Brennan Manning, “The Ragamuffin Gospel”
Before you begin sharing your story, ask yourself these questions:
- Why is the gospel “good news” to me?
- What specific changes has Jesus made in my life?
- How is my life different now compared to before I knew Jesus?
- What emotions do I feel because of my relationship with God?
- How has Jesus changed my perspective on the world and life?
As you reflect on these questions, consider praying about who might benefit from hearing your story. You don’t have to be a theologian; you just need to share what you’ve experienced.
One of the most encouraging things that Jesus reminds us of in His command to witness is that — the power of the Holy Spirit will come upon us and help us. Now, let your unique story be a source of inspiration and encouragement for others on their journey of faith!

Do you really want to know my sordid story? I was once told by a Navy Chaplain, to whom I went for spiritual help, that “Jesus doesn’t want people like you.” Proverbs 22:6 – Mom and dad drug me to church. They made me learn those memory verses. Then we joined a Sunday morning bowling league… But those verses were still in my head. The longer I stayed away, the deeper they were buried. At 17, I looked old enough to buy alcohol, so my friends gave me money and we partied. At 21, I joined the Navy. I thought… Read more »

I went back to Falluja for two more tours. During my seventh tour I was injured sent to hospital in Germany to recover. While in the… Read more »
This is my story. At an early age I was sexually, mentally, and physically abused by family members until I was in high school. I told my mom when all this started happening, she did nothing as she did not believe me. I could not understand why God would let this happen. We went to the Catholic Church every Sunday. After graduating high school I let my parents with only my clothes. They did not/would not give me anything else. I moved to the city with my boyfriend. He left me after 6 months. I was on my own doing… Read more »
My story is one of physical healing, when it wasn’t looking good. My husband and I were already Christ followers. In Oct 2021 I was diagnosed with stomach cancer. To say I fell apart is way too much of an understatement. Thee shock and disbelief was too much to bear, so our church family, family in general, friends, people we didn’t even know, but heard, lifted me up in prayer on a daily basis. Messages came pouring in with encouragement, affirmation of “God’s got this “, was surrounding me, as I went thru the first round of chemo. What was… Read more »
