Heaven On My Mind dropped March 7, and he really wants us to experience this one differently.
Instead of just picking out a few radio hits, he’s asking us to listen from start to finish. And honestly? That makes sense, because this album tells a story.
“It would break my heart if somebody didn’t listen to this whole record. It’s made for a full-length listen. The thoughts, pain, beauty, and promise behind this album have all come together as the next step of Life After Death.” | TobyMac
Why You’ll Want to Hear This Album in Order
TobyMac has always been great at writing songs that hit you right where you’re at, and Heaven On My Mind is no exception. The 12 tracks take you on a journey about perspective, endurance in life’s battles, and the hope we have that we will get to heaven one day. Part of faith is remembrance: remembering the blessings and the hard times that God brought you through.
A Few Songs to Look Out For
- “Heaven On My Mind” – The title track sets the tone, all about keeping our eyes on what really matters.
- “Rearview” (feat. Juan Winans) – A reminder to leave the past behind and move forward.
- “God Did It“ – One of those songs that makes you look back and realize, yep, God was in that moment.
- “a lil Church (nobody’s too lost)” – This one’s got a message we all need: no one is beyond redemption.
- “Resist (Keep The Devil Away)” (feat. Terrian) – A high-energy anthem about standing strong in faith.
- “Campfire (That Very Love)” – This one’s extra special because Toby wrote it about his friend Gabe.
The Story Behind “Campfire”
Speaking of “Campfire,” this might be one of the most personal songs on the album. TobyMac wrote it as a tribute to his friend Gabe, reflecting on their friendship and the kind of love that lasts a lifetime. If you’ve ever lost someone close to you, this song is going to hit home.
“Without a doubt one of my favorite songs on there is ‘Campfire.’ It’s very folky which is weird for me. It just feels like a warm Campfire which is why we called it that. I wrote it for my friend Gabe, who is in heaven with my son Truett now. It’s super personal, which I normally don’t put on my albums. But when Gabe was diagnosed with cancer, we got together and prayed- asking God to change His mind. There’s something special about the intimacy of asking God to change His mind, and that inspired me to write this song.” | TobyMac
Where to Listen
Heaven On My Mind will be everywhere—Apple Music, Amazon, Spotify, and even vinyl if you’re into that. But however you listen, take Toby’s advice and play it all the way through. Some songs will get stuck in your head, some will speak to your heart, but together, they tell a story.
“There’s so much emotion in it. I think it will meet you where you are. And all the songs are coming from a different place. Heaven On My Mind doesn’t mean I’m not thinking about life on Earth. But, when you face certain things, you have to decide if heaven is real. If you choose to knock on the door with curiosity, you will be met with kindness, compassion, and love. ” | TobyMac
Listening to Heaven On My Mind from start to finish is one thing—but how well does TobyMac actually remember his own songs? Some were easy, some were deep cuts, and the reactions? Well, you’ll just have to see…
