Amy Grant is returning to music, after a 10 year hiatus since her 2013 album “How Mercy Looks From Here” with two new songs “Trees We’ll Never See” releasing March 24 followed by “What You Heard” to release in April. We can also expect a duet with Cory Asbury coming soon.
Amy has been on quite a wild journey the past few years beginning with open-heart surgery in 2020. Not too long after recovering, in the summer of 2022, she suffered a bicycle accident while riding with a friend in Nashville. After hitting a pothole, the singer was unconscious for 10-15 minutes, an event that she doesn’t remember. Most recently, in January 2023, she had a cyst removed from her throat.
Grant has much to celebrate, coming back to her love for music after an unusually quiet season. The bicycle accident resulted in brain injury and memory loss that caused her to forget lyrics to her own songs. Even songs that she’s been singing for decades, year after year. Doctors advised her to take a break and she had to make the difficult decision to cancel her tour.
This was an abrupt pause to the full and busy life Amy has lived. Since signing with Word Records 5 weeks before her 16th birthday, she has been working hard writing songs and creating albums that sent her on a whirlwind of concert tours and TV appearances. For the first time in her lifetime, everything stopped. She was given what she now sees as a gift, a season of quiet, rest and reset.
“It’s fun to be reminded after a season of simplicity of what really makes me happy and music and making music really makes me happy.”
Amy Grant returned the stage with long time friend Michael W. Smith for their 2022 Christmas concerts, relying on a teleprompter to give her confidence in the lyrics. She is also back on tour! Amy is making her way through 70 cities across the US. Fans attending her shows are getting to hear a preview of the new song “Trees We’ll Never See”, a song about the beauty of every day moments, finding purpose in the time we’re given and the awe of God’s plan in creation.
After being asked to record with Cory Asbury, Grant was inspired to explore some songs she and Marshall Altman had already written.
“So much creativity has been put on hold in my life, for all kinds of reasons,” shares Grant when talking about the new music. “Last summer I was asked to sing on a new Cory Asbury song yet to be released. This might be one of the best songs I have heard in a long time. I was so glad they waited for me to heal up and get back to the studio. Inspired by Cory’s beautiful song, Marshall Altman and I started talking about songs that we’ve written recently that affected us. I played him one of mine. He played me one of his. His song was “Trees We’ll never See. I loved it immediately and asked him if I could record it, and within two weeks, both songs were mixed & mastered!”
Amy shared this thought on Facebook when “Trees We’ll Never See” was released, reminding us of the importance of the seeds we plant in the lives of those around us.
We’re happy to celebrate with Amy as she confidently emerges from this difficult season with new beginnings, new hope and new music!
